BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU
Brazilian Jiu-jitsu (BJJ) is a martial arts system that emphasises training in grappling. Students of this arts will learn about takedowns, joint manipulation, chokes, how to achieve positional dominance on the ground and how to escape from less desirable positions. Emphasis is placed on leverage, and how to apply techniques with minimum strength. BJJ is normally performed in a Gi, which serves as a training tool and gives the student a greater element of control. The art can also be modified for Submission Grappling, which is essentially grappling without a Gi. Simon McGovern has been training in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu for the last 6 years and is a Purple Belt under Lagarto. Simon is a BJJ teacher under GB Lagarto Team and currently competes as a BJJ competition. Lucio "Lagarto" Rodrigues is a World, Pan Am, European and National Champion and a BJJ Black Belt Instructor under Carlos Gracie Jr and the Gracie Barra family. He is founder and head coach of GB Lagarto Team and is the Head Brazilian Jiu-jistu advisor for the McGovern Academy. Paul Hartley is a BJJ Purple Belt under Lagarto, and is the owner of the Longridge Institute where GB Lagarto Team is based. He is responsable for introducing Simon to BJJ and is an advisor to the McGovern Academy with Lagarto.
