Simon McGovern began his training at the age of 6 in Karate which he studied for 10 years. At 16 Simon met Dave Carnell and was totally blown away by the training he saw. This marked the beginning of a journey which would change his life from that point on. Simon began his training in the arts of Jeet Kune Do, Buka Jalan and Kali-Escrima-Arnis under Dave Carnell and the Magda Institute Association. Training as often as he could, Simon progressed through the classes and became an assistant to Dave Carnell where he would teach classes in the school and travel around the world helping Dave to teach and spread the training methods, principles and philosophies of the arts. Being one of a very few people ever to study this close to Dave, Simon spent the next 17 years by his side every day listening, learning, training and teaching with Dave and as a result in 2006, Simon became the first and only student to date, ever to achieve the rank of Full-Instructor under Dave Carnell, and the first Second Generation under Cass Magda and the M.I Association in the arts of Jeet Kune Do, Buka Jalan and Kali-Escrima-Arnis. In 2001 Simon was bitten by the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu bug from his friend Paul Hartley and he quickly began training in it as a perfect compliment to his other training. In 2004 he achieved the the rank of Blue belt from the Gracie Barra Master Roberto "Gordo" Carrera de Lima. In 2005 Lucio "Lagarto" Rodrigues arrived in the UK perminantly teaching at Paul Hartley's school and Simon jumped at the chance to train with him. in 2006 Simon achieved the rank of Purple belt under Lagarto and is now one of the few people in the country to be recognised as an Instructor under Gracie Barra Lagarto Team.
